Alamgir Mosque in Varanasi, India

Alamgir Mosque in Varanasi

Also known as Beni Madhav Ka Darera, Alamgir Mosque is another splendid mosque, which aligns with heavenly Panch Ganges Ghat. The Hindu Temple, built by Beni Madhur Rao Scindia, a Maratha chieftain, was demolished when the emperor Aurangzeb had captured Banaras. The mosque is the perfect example of classical architecture. A wonderful but credible fact about the mosque is that it is the largest structure located on the ghats of river Ganges in Varanasi. Like Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, Alamgir mosque was also built by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

Location of Alamgir Mosque :

Alamgir Mosque is situated at Panch Ganges ghat. We need to climb few steps to reach this mosque from Panch Ganges ghat. Veni(Beni) Madhav temple is also situated opposite to this mosque.

Alamgir Mosque : This mosque was also constructed by Aurangzeb, a hatred-monger. Though Aurangzeb religiously pursued Islamic architectural style but Hindu architectural niceties couldn't be avoided to make this mosque an architectural gem. A famous bathing point, Panch Ganges Ghat, liesbelow it

Since the toes are taken down for risk of falling, you can’t really tell this is amosque until somebody tells you. This mosque is very old and maintained by the trust. In the evening they light up the tombs with some colourful lights to give a nice view to it.

Mosque is a really quiet place with a small square and amazing view over Ganges.
