Puri

Puri one of the most holy pilgrimage places for Hindus, also popular as Jagannath Puri, is located in the state of Odisha. Puri is famous for the Jagannath temple and is supposed to be the final sleeping place of Lord Vishnu. Undoubtedly Puri is a very important place of worship for the Hindus.

Together with Konark and Bhubaneshwar Odisha completes the golden triangle. Puri is a large reservoir of art and architecture of India with Shree Jagannath Puri Temple as the most attention fetching temple of the town.

Puri which is popular as one of the four dhams of Hindus has the Jagannath Puri temple which was constructed in the 11th century is the starting point for the famous Rath Yatra from which the English language derived the word ‘juggernaut’. In July every year the Rath Yatra takes place and during the RathYatra, entry to the town and the temple is restricted to Hindus. While visiting Shani Temple make certain to bend against the Shani temple, watch its peak and do taste the food served at Shani temple. By paying a little you can get into the sanctum and touch the deities in the main temple.

You can also visit Govardhana matha, which is one of the four fundamental institutions of Puri (others are at Sringeri, Dwarka and Jyotirmath) established by Adi Shankaracharya. The Govardhan Matha serve as an important link between the Eastern and Southern Indian since ancient times.

The clean golden beach of Puri is another tourist attractions in Puri which is ideal for surfing. If you want to see the beauty of the sea then the same can be done on the nights of the full moon as the waves can get quite high. If you want to swim through the Chakra Tirtha road end then be careful as the canal that carries raw sewage into the ocean is nearby here.

Best time to visit : The beach can be visited throughout the year but the best time to visit is between October to March.

Shopping in puri : Handicrafts of the Region: Soap Stone, Sea-shell, Pattachitras and Palm Leaf paintings, Horn work, Wood carvings, and Solapith work can be purchased from Puri. You can also buy good cotton sarees around Temple Road.
