As per history once upon a time Delhi is said to be the Maurya Capital as it was on the great national highway of the Mauryas that linked their capital Patliputra (now Patna in Bihar) with Taxila (Takshashila), now in Pakistan. The Buddhist Monks who have to travel to Taxila are supposed to have chosen this route and because of this very fact Delhi has strategic and historical importance. Thereafter in 12th century the Chauhans took control of Delhi in their hand and made Delhi the most important Hindu centre in northern India.

   History of Delhi Sultanate, India:

History reveals that Delhi has seen various ups and down. Several rulers came and rule Delhi. In 1193 Delhi was acquired by Qutab-Ud-Din Aibak which later on was followed by powerful Mughals from the year 1526 to 1857. After that came the Khilji followers, who, built their new capital at Siri, the second city of Delhi. Then came the Ghiyas-Ud-Din who reigned from 1321-25 and built the third city of Delhi, with the name of Tughlakabad, which was built inside the great fortress with 13 outer gates. After Ghiyas-Ud-Din came Muhammed Bin Tughlak who built the fourth city of Delhi with the name of Jahanpanah. Later on the capital was shifted to Daulatabad in Deccan which resulted in the loss of soldiers because it was a difficult march of 1120 kilometers. Finally Tughlaq forfeited his decision and Delhi got back the status of capital.

Thereafter the fifth city was built by Feroz Shah Tughlak in the year 1351 on the banks of river Yamuna with the name of Ferozabad whose remains can still be found in the city. Ferozbad was then destroyed by Shah Jahan to build Shahjahanabad. In the form of tomb and monuments within the Lodi gardens the remains of the sixth city can be found. And finally Old Delhi which is still present in the form of old areas of Delhi happens to be the sixth city.
